I have started making everything these days. It makes me feel wonderful to know I can save my family some money with small changes. In a way I miss going to the store and picking fragrances or specific properties about the supplies we needed. It was time for a change though. Every month or so I'd buy a new lotion or "all purpose" cleaner because I just didn't like the one I was using. (My favorite and the one I dislike the most is Lysol. It smells fantastic and it cleans well but it leaves a sticky residue after a few weeks worth of using only it.) For the past few months I've been mixing my own cleaners from baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice. Depending on the job and my needs I'll use varying amounts. It's been fantastic. I never run out of anything since they're all common pantry items and those three ingredients work on virtually every job. Plu I no longer need baby proofing for the cleaners since they're all safe for ingestion!
Well, last night I thought I'd try a hair mask recipe. Hair masks are supposed to help treat scalp condition and improve hair moisture/texture. The one I started with was an basic overall scalp/hair health type mix. I figured I'd start with that and see how it turned out. The recipe was 1 avocado, 1/4 c coconut milk, 2T olive oil, 1T honey. I can't even describe the smell, it's was very nutty but the coconut stood out the most. I spread it on, saturating everything then covered my head with a shower cap. I zoned to tv while it did it's job then showered. I ended up shampooing three times and still smoothing in conditioner afterwards. This mix made my hair feel straw like (The same feeling after you've dyed your hair one too many times.) I don't think I want to try it again. Oh, well. I've been making my own body scrub for the last 6 months. In my mind since that worked well everything else would too!
Any suggestions of great household recipes? I'd love to try your favorites. If you can't find something specific I can dig out my journal and send you the ones I have.
XOXO, A. Scott
