Amie's recognition of letters and sounds has flourished over this last month. She's known 4 letters for almost a year now, A M I E. Recently she's begun telling me how many A's are in words by seeing the written word or hearing it spoken. It's developed into quite a fascination now. She'll do this with almost any letter we give her. While she's been able to sing her alphabet in English and spanish since she started speaking, her understanding of each individual letter has always been a bit shaky. This last week she's started pointing out letters that confuse me, S O P T Z Y K. Where did this group of letters come from? I didn't teach her that. It has to be Word World.
A while back I saw a blog post about a game to play with kids to help reinforce letters and numbers. I wish I could remember where I saw it, the blog was full of great ideas! This mom used an alphabet placemat and a handful of small candies, like M&M's or smarties. Every time her child pointed out the right letter or number she was given one candy. I love this idea! I started making a template for mine today. Right now it's a 19"X11" sheet of paper with the letters written on as I want them. When I have the chance later tonight I'll cut out my canvas and start "embroidering" the letters in place. I'm not positive yet if I'm going to appliqué, hand embroider with floss or use a machined satin stitch to make the letters... We will see. Think of all the times you were sent home with a sheet of words you needed to learn to spell or when you had to memorize the states, it would be easy enough to make it into a game like this. Who isn't motivated by a piece of candy. Now that the thought has come to mind, I want to draw a map of our country on the reverse of the placemat so we can do the same game with the states! Thanks for the brainstorm! I'm also in the process of making a fabric quiet book for Matty and Temperance. The number pages are ready to be put on their rings. I've got sketches of easily 20 different pages with fun activities and adorable artwork. Of course the normal, buttoned shirt and laced up shoe are in the works. I also have seasons and colors. I should be able to get a bunch of it done in the evenings. I'd lover to give these things to the kids soon!
Even Matty is staring to speak more clearly. His B's and D's sound different. Mommy and Daddy comes out fairly recognizable no longer a mumbled mamama or dadada. He uses to correct word when doing things. If he wants more to drink he'll hold up his cup saying cu, cu. Same with dip (di.) although he's not associating all sounds with words yet, he's been exploring consonants with great enunciation.
Jeremiah believes he did very well on his 100 exam. One portion of the test was graded yesterday, apparently the proctor had to really look for things to take points off on. I think that's an odd concept but was quickly corrected by Miah. If you do well, they assume you've cheated. So what was all that studying for? He busted his behind to know as much as possible so he wouldn't fail yet it's better to have a barely passing score than close to perfect. I'm not sure I like this way of thinking.
Xoxo, A. Scott
