Valentines day is probably my least favorite holiday. Not because of the traditions or the "celebration of love" theme but the idea that any one can create a holiday for anything. I don't know a single person that celebrates this day for religious purpose.
Regardless, any day that gives me a reason to craft is a good one. I especially like the craft if I do not have to take out a loan from the 1st bank of my husband for new supplies. I saw the cutest candy craft on Not So Idle Hands. Her version used the big candy canes and melted chocolate candies with sugar crystal sprinkles. She made the cutest heart pops out of left over christmas candies!!!
You don't know how excited that made me. We have left over cherry flavored mini candies from god knows how long ago and I was afraid they might plague my pantry FOREVER! Well, not anymore. Amie helped me melt them into the sweetest V-Day candies. We tried filling them with chocolate but thats a very delicate process when you use the mini candy canes. I think they look cute just melted into the hearts and filled with more candy cane pieces.
One thing I did notice: When you take them out of the oven let them sit for 30 seconds, maybe a bit longer, then use your spatula to help push the ends together. This helps them adhere to each other much more nicely and it helps make the heart shape more pronounced. Other than that, the directions she gave are pretty accurate!
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the candy canes in their heart shape on a parchment paper lined pan then bake. We let ours go about 3 minutes, but keep an eye on yours before then! Take them out and let them cool slightly, this is where I poked them with the spatula to help them form the heart shape. If you want to fill them, melt the chocolate candies and spoon enough to fill the hole. Let set slightly then sprinkle with broken candies, nuts or sugar sprinkles. Let them cool then wrap or serve to guests.
See, super simple, quick and cute! Go check out her blog for the directions with images!!! It's adorable and a great way to get rid of old candies.
XOXO, A. Scott
